Stillness as an Art

Still.

According to the Merriam- Webster Dictionary “still” is:

a: devoid of or abstaining from motion

b: sedentary

c: uttering no sound: quiet, subdued, muted.

d: calm, tranquil

e: free from noise or turbulence

I have an 8 year old son and he is ANYTHING but still. That boy hasn’t stopped moving since he entered this world. “Cal, be quiet and still” I have uttered to him more times that I can begin to count.

I believe stillness is an art. It’s something that has to be practiced in our culture of hustle and bustle, especially at this time of year. There is always something to do, someone to see or technology to check in with.

I have come to find being still as a gift, but not one that I can easily unwrap like the shiny boxes under the Christmas tree. Nope, this one is different. This one I have to practice and often force myself to indulge in because it often feels so wrong, so lazy, so impossible.
